Once Upon a Time… (January 2012)

Guest post for Just Another Book Nerd blog – 18th January 2012

Once Upon a Time…

…there was a boy named Balik and a girl named Cassie and they lived on board the Space Station Hope. But where did they come from?

People will always look for autobiographical elements to someone’s writing, perhaps in the belief that you can only “write what you know”. I’m sure for every writer there are elements of them in each book they write – it might simply be a single phrase you use or a description of how you feel about something, which you then put in the mouth of one of your characters. But I think writers must appear in their own books somewhere.

I can tell you honestly that I am not Cassie, but we have similarities… I don’t like silence when you’re with people: I’m definitely a nervous waffler; but with people I’m comfortable with and care about, I’ll happily be quiet. We both have sarcastic tendencies and similar taste in guys J We like the same school subjects and she probably got her mildly argumentative streak from me. But I don’t live on a space station (surprise, surprise), or rock climb in my spare time (I am clumsy to a point that would make Bella Swan appear graceful and coordinated), and my medical expertise is limited to a basic first aid qualification.

Balik is – unfortunately – not someone I’ve met personally. But some of his strongest personality traits are familiar. The “have to know how it works” thing is another little piece of me – not necessarily in the practical sense as my lack of co-ordination inhibits me there J – but I love learning about new things. His strength and protective nature, putting someone else before himself, is something I have seen in loved ones close to me and is perhaps the most desirable quality anyone could possess. Who wouldn’t want the warrior with a heart on their side?

So where did the rest of the story come from?

Before I began Hope’s Daughter I was stuck in a rut with another novel I’d been working on (I probably hadn’t done any real writing in six months or so) and knew that I wanted to start something new, just to get myself going again. I had also been through a bit of a sci-fi phase in my reading (lots of Philip K Dick and HG Wells among others) and so I decided to do a very short piece for myself in this genre, just to see what it was like. At first it was just the Married Quarter, Balik and Cassie – but once I was writing it the story kept growing: I would drive to work listening to music and would see scenes pulling themselves together in my head, like a mini-montage and the outline of a deeper story began to come together.

I’m not a sci-fi specialist by any stretch of the imagination and so when I started building the world Cassie lives in, although I knew what it looked like, I had to refer to other people’s versions of space stations and outer space colonies to understand where technology we have now, might genuinely take us in the not too distant future. Although some of this detail was edited out of Hope’s Daughter, some things remain like the body scanners (which are real today) and waste recycling systems – naturally The Rainbow Maker’s Tale, which is Balik’s story shows much more of these things J You know how he is!

Similarly – and quite scarily – Cassie’s answer to the exam question posed at the beginning of the novel is based entirely on newspaper articles I have read. Often I would grab a copy of the free paper on my way into work and each day there are odd little science snippets alongside the more prominent articles on which celebrity is doing what or bizarre news stories. These tiny, single sentence items usually reference research being done or scientific predictions being made, which if they prove accurate could well affect the whole world…and they are hidden in a small text box alongside a page of celebrity fluff, which says a lot about what people think of as important. I cut out and kept the one that first made me think about this:

Metro – August 5, 2009

GLOBAL WARMING WILL SEE ‘BILLIONS AT WAR’

Billions of people will go to war as they are forced to leave areas made uninhabitable by global warming, climate change expert Lord Stern has warned. Much of the world’s population will be put into ‘severe conflict’ unless temperature rises are tackled, he added.

Billions of people…Billions… That’s the whole world isn’t it? As dystopian views of the future go (zombies, global plagues, giant monsters from outer space) for me, this is the one I could actually imagine happening. I could imagine us sleepwalking into a devastating situation like this, brought about mainly through a lack of interest and co-ordination. Today’s science fiction being tomorrow’s science fact…? A terrifying thought.

There was obviously more to the creation of Hope’s Daughter, most of which I can’t share because of the spoilers! But it is surprising, even to me, when I go back to my notes and research from the beginning and see how a single idea became an entire book. It is interesting to see what changed – a lot – and what remains from the original concept.

Facebook (January 2012)

The writing is going well – in that I mean I’m writing a lot, not that it’s necessarily good stuff! 🙂 But it is happening, which is the main thing. I’m focused on Outlanders as that is where my mind keeps taking me at the moment and I’m keen to see what happens – things are already changing, she’s a wily lass that Cassie and sometimes she needs to remind me that I’m not really in control of what she does. (That sounds a little crazy…oh dear).

On the non-writing side of things – the first reviews are starting to come in and I’ve been very happy 😀 (posted on the new interviews and reviews page of the website) and the book is out with approx. another dozen reviewers, so will hopefully see more feedback in the next few weeks. There are also some guest posts and interviews lined up for Jan-Feb, which I’m looking forward to.

This week I’ve launched my personal author page on facebook to compliment the book pages – I’m also going to have to admit defeat on Twitter – I don’t get it and think I probably talk too much to fit it in to such a small space.

So – facebook – the author page:

What better way to launch my author page than a giveaway? Who doesn’t like free things 🙂

So… if you’d like to win a copy of Hope’s Daughter for your iPad/iPhone or Kindle, wander over to my facebook author page and post a message on the wall – at the end of the month five people will be selected at random and receive a copy of the book. Plus – if we can make it to 250 ‘likes’ by the end of the month, we’ll double the prize to ten copies.

Happy New Year! (January 2012)

Happy new year out there! I hope 2012 brings you everything you need in life to make you happy 🙂

So – what’s been happening here?

At least with the holidays I managed to get some reading done – although having spent a lot of time on Goodreads my ‘to read’ list has gotten ridiculously long! Will let you know how well I get on with that soon.

December was very busy on the run up to Christmas with promotion for Hope’s Daughter, sorting out reviews, interviews, etc. and keeping that side of things going during the holidays. It’s done well on facebook so far – around 250 followers in two weeks – and the first reviews have been good 🙂

Heading into the new year I’ll still be doing some promotion work, but am turning most of my attention to get RMT and Outlanders completed for publication later in 2012. Not dates as yet – will have to see how easily the words come.

Thanks (December 2011)

I just wanted to jot a quick thank you to people who’ve helped me out with proof reading and comments in getting HD to where it is…

Firstly – I should thank Becky, because although she never read Hope’s Daughter, Becky was my first ever ‘reader’ and knows someone named Faris very well (if he ever makes it from draft to publication you’ll meet him too). But I couldn’t have gotten Cassie off the ground if there had not been previous writing – and so thank you Becky – you helped me with my early attempts!

A special ‘thank you’ to my three HD readers, who have read various versions of the novel and offered helpful grammar edits when I’d missed them, as well as feedback on the characters and the story development – we see a lot more of Ami because of one of them and Cassie is a lot less ‘bile-y’ in the later chapters because of another – don’t ask about the bile!

Anyway – so a big BIG thank you to Emma, Vikki and Jenny – your time was very much appreciated and your feedback helped me a lot. Be prepared – I may chuckOutlanders your way too if you’re not too busy with life, babies and jobs (not all at once for all of you!) 🙂

If you’ve ever tried writing yourself – or any similar ‘creative’ thing – you’ll know how invaluable critique and support is from people you trust – so cheers me dears –  I owe you a drink! 😉 You’ll also know how hard it is to ‘self-edit’ as you get to know the story so well, you almost don’t read it – so please forgive me the odd couple of typos that made it in – they are undoubtedly my oversight as I was the final proof reader.

Distractions (November 2011)

http://cusick-jones.com/blog.php?post=3 11/8/2011 10:06:31 PM

I’ve really been trying to finish Hope’s Daughter, although I have been getting quite distracted by Outlanders in the last week or so – the words are coming much easier for that than my final draft edits.

But my biggest distraction has been because I’ve found myself with some free time – so rather than open up the laptop I’ve been disappearing off reading for ridiculous amounts of time – and got around to reading some decent YA novels that I’ve wanted to for a while now – selection of them below (I’m sure you’re all well ahead of me on these!)

Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman – such a great idea and really well written – I was just so sad at the end I’ve not been able to face the idea of the rest of the series yet.

The Darkest Powers Trilogy – Kelley Armstrong
Been out there for a while so I’m sure many people will have come across these – the first one is particularly good and gives a nice slant on supernatural for YA.

Becca Fitzpatrick – Fallen Angel series
Again – as a best seller I’ll bet most people have read these well before me. Great characters in Patch, Vee and Nora – as my first dabble in the ‘fallen angel’ genre really enjoyed these – again I think I like the ‘odd number’ books the best, in this case Hush Hush and Silence.

Feeling a little at a loss when I finished the Fallen Angel books I went straight for another of the same with After Eden – a fantastic book from Katherine Pine – less than £1.00 for my Kindle as well which was an absolute steal if you ask me! It feels slightly more involved ‘biblically speaking’ than the previous grouping – and her imagery and descriptions are really great – nothing close to cliche and very detailed without taking away from the pace of the plot. Apparently there’s a sequel coming soon, so I’ll be looking out for that. Check out the link below if you’d like to give this one a go:

On the non-YA side of things I’ve also got a stack of things awaiting my sleepy eyes: The Concubine’s Secret by Kate Furnivall – sequel to The Russian Concubine which I loved and read a few years ago. If you like historical novels this one is great. I’ve also just been given The Crimson Petal and the White to read by someone who professed it unputdownable – another historical novel and an international bestseller, so I’m expecting big things. I’ve also got a couple of ‘movie books’ – having not seen the films have been instead inspired to read the books and so I’ve got One Day and The Help in the pile as well.

With all that to read I’m sure I’ll make myself more late with my own stuff!

Getting Started (October 2011)

]]> http://cusick-jones.com/blog.php?post=2 10/10/2011 8:10:25 PM
So here you go – post one!

I’m busy plodding through my fourth (and hopefully final) full re-draft of Hope’s Daughter. It’s pretty hard at this stage as I know I’m close to the end and you really want it done, but then you procrastinate about tiny details, knowing that these are the last changes you can make. But we’re nearly there, so fingers crossed I’ll be done for the end of November at the latest.

In the meantime, am pretty sure I’ve got the artwork sorted for the cover design, which feels quite exciting to see, especially given that I’m the kind of person who can’t draw stick men particularly well.

Now all I need to do is stop getting distracted by other things like life and reading other people’s books and the impending Christmas holidays…

A new blog…

I’ve decided to move my author blog over to wordpress instead of having it connected to the website. It’s just easier for updating as I don’t have to go through loads of logins and screens just to add a little random thought. There’s also a lot more features here to play with, so that seemed the better option.

So…bear with me while I get historic stuff moved across and hopefully I’ll be up and running soon.
