Bookaholics Book Group – Guest Post (January 2012)

http://cusick-jones.com/blog.php?post=12 1/21/2012 11:15:29 AM Recent guest post I wrote for Bookaholics Book Group – 16th January 2012

Writing became such a process of discovery that I couldn’t wait to get to work in the morning:  I wanted to know what I was going to say.  ~Sharon O’Brien

When you tell people you know that you’ve written a book, it’s interesting how many of them say “I always thought I’d write a book one day.”

If I were being honest, I think when I first started writing it was just to see if I could do it. I had graduated uni with an English degree – that’s a lot of reading J  – and was doing temp work to pay the bills, leaving a lot of free space in my brain. That’s when I thought: “I’ll write a book.” That was the easy part.

My original book idea – a first stab at writing – is still sitting neatly in the bottom of my half-finished drafts pile decidedly ignored. (I actually cringe to read it now). The character and plot I still like and may go back to – I just need to be a lot better than I was! The hardest thing isn’t the idea – there are fantastic concepts for novels I believe most people would come up with – it is the actual creation of a person…a world…a story that is so much harder than I ever thought it would be.

Practice. It might not make you perfect, but it definitely helps you get better. Although Hope’s Daughter is my first published novel, I’ve completed four others prior to that, a couple of which I would consider releasing after a lot of revision. Hope’s Daughter is the first piece that I felt comfortable putting out for review, ridicule and whatever else may come – lol. But writing the other full novels really helped me.

Questions. When you’re writing – especially editing – you answer a lot of questions: would the character do that? How would they react to this? Should we see more of this person, less of another? If you have some twists or mystery the most difficult thing is ‘drip feeding’ the clues in exactly the right way to let a reader understand where things might go, without giving the game away. I definitely didn’t have that skill down when I first tried writing – I was trying to get every piece of the story down in chapter one, just because I knew where things would end up going. J Hopefully I’m better at that now.

Support. Taking a creative writing course definitely helped me. You develop techniques for making you look more creatively at the world than I think I did originally. Feedback is undoubtedly the best way to improve, but you need to be able to take it for what it is. No one should have something they’ve lovingly crafted ripped apart, but if you can find helpful, constructive reviewers, friends and beta readers (the last is absolutely vital I have discovered) then they will help you write what you want to.

Reading. I imagine most writers are bookaholics at heart. Reading widely and what you like cannot be beaten. Although Hope’s Daughter is my story, it has probably been influenced by every book I’ve ever read and draws in elements from those that I love and stayed with me after I closed the cover (or switched off the kindle!) and steers clear of those I don’t!

Just do it. If you love to read and want to write, then do it! J There may be natural writing geniuses out there, although I doubt it. Writing is a skill – some parts you can make better with practice, other parts will be absolutely individual to you because of what you love, what you read and how you look at the world. If it’s something you want to do, then you should. I love my characters – I like seeing how they grow and change from who I thought they were when I first met them. I love the giddy little rush I feel when I solve a problem in the narrative to get me from one scene to another – or more so when I think of a sneaky twist to hopefully make everything more interesting. For me writing and reading go hand-in-hand now, sometimes I have to drag myself away from one to do the other, but I love both.

The writing is going well – in that I mean I’m writing a lot, not that it’s necessarily good stuff! 🙂 But it is happening, which is the main thing. I’m focused on Outlanders as that is where my mind keeps taking me at the moment and I’m keen to see what happens – things are already changing, she’s a wily lass that Cassie and sometimes she needs to remind me that I’m not really in control of what she does. (That sounds a little crazy…oh dear).

On the non-writing side of things – the first reviews are starting to come in and I’ve been very happy 😀 (posted on the new interviews and reviews page of the website) and the book is out with approx. another dozen reviewers, so will hopefully see more feedback in the next few weeks. There are also some guest posts and interviews lined up for Jan-Feb, which I’m looking forward to.

This week I’ve launched my personal author page on facebook to compliment the book pages – I’m also going to have to admit defeat on Twitter – I don’t get it and think I probably talk too much to fit it in to such a small space.

So – facebook – the author page:

What better way to launch my author page than a giveaway? Who doesn’t like free things 🙂

So… if you’d like to win a copy of Hope’s Daughter for your iPad/iPhone or Kindle, wander over to my facebook author page and post a message on the wall – at the end of the month five people will be selected at random and receive a copy of the book. Plus – if we can make it to 250 ‘likes’ by the end of the month, we’ll double the prize to ten copies.

Happy New Year! (January 2012)

Happy new year out there! I hope 2012 brings you everything you need in life to make you happy 🙂

So – what’s been happening here?

At least with the holidays I managed to get some reading done – although having spent a lot of time on Goodreads my ‘to read’ list has gotten ridiculously long! Will let you know how well I get on with that soon.

December was very busy on the run up to Christmas with promotion for Hope’s Daughter, sorting out reviews, interviews, etc. and keeping that side of things going during the holidays. It’s done well on facebook so far – around 250 followers in two weeks – and the first reviews have been good 🙂

Heading into the new year I’ll still be doing some promotion work, but am turning most of my attention to get RMT and Outlanders completed for publication later in 2012. Not dates as yet – will have to see how easily the words come.

Thanks (December 2011)

http://cusick-jones.com/blog.php?post=7 12/13/2011 12:49:45 PM Hope’s Daughter

I just wanted to jot a quick thank you to people who’ve helped me out with proof reading and comments in getting HD to where it is…

Firstly – I should thank Becky, because although she never read Hope’s Daughter, Becky was my first ever ‘reader’ and knows someone named Faris very well (if he ever makes it from draft to publication you’ll meet him too). But I couldn’t have gotten Cassie off the ground if there had not been previous writing – and so thank you Becky – you helped me with my early attempts!

A special ‘thank you’ to my three HD readers, who have read various versions of the novel and offered helpful grammar edits when I’d missed them, as well as feedback on the characters and the story development – we see a lot more of Ami because of one of them and Cassie is a lot less ‘bile-y’ in the later chapters because of another – don’t ask about the bile!

Anyway – so a big BIG thank you to Emma, Vikki and Jenny – your time was very much appreciated and your feedback helped me a lot. Be prepared – I may chuckOutlanders your way too if you’re not too busy with life, babies and jobs (not all at once for all of you!) 🙂

If you’ve ever tried writing yourself – or any similar ‘creative’ thing – you’ll know how invaluable critique and support is from people you trust – so cheers me dears –  I owe you a drink! 😉 You’ll also know how hard it is to ‘self-edit’ as you get to know the story so well, you almost don’t read it – so please forgive me the odd couple of typos that made it in – they are undoubtedly my oversight as I was the final proof reader.

Patience (December 2011)

http://cusick-jones.com/blog.php?post=5 12/3/2011 3:09:19 PM
It’s been a few weeks now since I finished my work on Hope’s Daughter, but the e-book version is still not finalised because I’m waiting on the cover art being sorted and that’s taking longer than I thought it would. I’ve given them one final revision, which wouldn’t appear to be too difficult, but it’s been another couple of days since I heard anything.

With the writing part, it all comes down to you – if I don’t get something done then I’ve only myself to moan about – so waiting on someone else does not come easy… So to fill the time I’ve re-arranged most of the furniture in my house (again), put up the Christmas decorations (daftly excited for someone of my age!), read a couple of books and started work onOutlanders with gusto.

But all I want for Christmas is to see Hope’s Daughter on the virtual shelves of the Kindle Store and iBooks – so please Santa…can you do this for me? I’ve been really rather good this year!

Done! (November 2011)

http://cusick-jones.com/blog.php?post=4 11/18/2011 3:53:05 PM
After a few days of non-stop reading and editing I’ve saved the ‘FINAL’ version and have sent it off… (deep breath) …so, a few more days for the artwork and proof, then it should be on sale by the start of December. I can’t believe I’ve actually drawn a line under this book to say ‘it’s finished’.

Well, I think I’ll grab a cuppa and take a break. Nothing to do now but wait.

Distractions (November 2011)

http://cusick-jones.com/blog.php?post=3 11/8/2011 10:06:31 PM

I’ve really been trying to finish Hope’s Daughter, although I have been getting quite distracted by Outlanders in the last week or so – the words are coming much easier for that than my final draft edits.

But my biggest distraction has been because I’ve found myself with some free time – so rather than open up the laptop I’ve been disappearing off reading for ridiculous amounts of time – and got around to reading some decent YA novels that I’ve wanted to for a while now – selection of them below (I’m sure you’re all well ahead of me on these!)

Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman – such a great idea and really well written – I was just so sad at the end I’ve not been able to face the idea of the rest of the series yet.

The Darkest Powers Trilogy – Kelley Armstrong
Been out there for a while so I’m sure many people will have come across these – the first one is particularly good and gives a nice slant on supernatural for YA.

Becca Fitzpatrick – Fallen Angel series
Again – as a best seller I’ll bet most people have read these well before me. Great characters in Patch, Vee and Nora – as my first dabble in the ‘fallen angel’ genre really enjoyed these – again I think I like the ‘odd number’ books the best, in this case Hush Hush and Silence.

Feeling a little at a loss when I finished the Fallen Angel books I went straight for another of the same with After Eden – a fantastic book from Katherine Pine – less than £1.00 for my Kindle as well which was an absolute steal if you ask me! It feels slightly more involved ‘biblically speaking’ than the previous grouping – and her imagery and descriptions are really great – nothing close to cliche and very detailed without taking away from the pace of the plot. Apparently there’s a sequel coming soon, so I’ll be looking out for that. Check out the link below if you’d like to give this one a go:

On the non-YA side of things I’ve also got a stack of things awaiting my sleepy eyes: The Concubine’s Secret by Kate Furnivall – sequel to The Russian Concubine which I loved and read a few years ago. If you like historical novels this one is great. I’ve also just been given The Crimson Petal and the White to read by someone who professed it unputdownable – another historical novel and an international bestseller, so I’m expecting big things. I’ve also got a couple of ‘movie books’ – having not seen the films have been instead inspired to read the books and so I’ve got One Day and The Help in the pile as well.

With all that to read I’m sure I’ll make myself more late with my own stuff!

Getting Started (October 2011)

]]> http://cusick-jones.com/blog.php?post=2 10/10/2011 8:10:25 PM
So here you go – post one!

I’m busy plodding through my fourth (and hopefully final) full re-draft of Hope’s Daughter. It’s pretty hard at this stage as I know I’m close to the end and you really want it done, but then you procrastinate about tiny details, knowing that these are the last changes you can make. But we’re nearly there, so fingers crossed I’ll be done for the end of November at the latest.

In the meantime, am pretty sure I’ve got the artwork sorted for the cover design, which feels quite exciting to see, especially given that I’m the kind of person who can’t draw stick men particularly well.

Now all I need to do is stop getting distracted by other things like life and reading other people’s books and the impending Christmas holidays…

A new blog…

I’ve decided to move my author blog over to wordpress instead of having it connected to the website. It’s just easier for updating as I don’t have to go through loads of logins and screens just to add a little random thought. There’s also a lot more features here to play with, so that seemed the better option.

So…bear with me while I get historic stuff moved across and hopefully I’ll be up and running soon.
